The Yōkotsu and the Taiten are said to be the same tengu; they were already by the late Edo period often categorized under the same heading. Taiten are said to be actually female, and possibly the spirits of maidservants who were killed in the past. They are generally said to be females because they are often described as being attractive, and because they love to commit mischief. Because of this, they are considered to be highly active in the world of love, although they are also said to be capable of great cruelty and violence. In one legend, a woman who had committed suicide by drowning herself in a river was transformed into a Taiten. In another legend, a woman was ordered to drown herself in order to repay the favor of her husband, who was a tengu. When she refused, the tengu drove her into the sea, and the woman was transformed into a Taiten.[6]
The Kitsune-tamago have been considered to be a lesser variety of tengu since the Edo period.
