The title of Pride and Prejudice can be seen as a commentary on 19th-century British society, particularly on the independence of women. Pride and prejudice refers to Elizabeth's family history and the fact that her father and sisters are prejudiced against Mr. Darcy. Austen depicts the Bennet family as an insular, snobbish clan, and the way they treat Darcy is the opposite of the way they treated Wickham. They consider his behavior an insult to the family name and class.
In the 19th century, society was stratified by class. Members of different social classes were often prejudiced against each other. But Elizabeth might have been prejudiced against Mr. Darcy, but she also shows her pride in Jane's good looks and their friendship.
The story of Pride and Prejudice is, of course, that of a woman who simply cannot get over her pride when it comes to her matchmaking skills, and a man who is simply not given over to blind prejudice when he comes across a woman who interests him.
