In less than a decade, Stravinsky composed a repertory which combined movable-scale, unison, and polytonal techniques with melodic material inspired by folk and national musical traditions. Influential contemporaries prepared the way for this expanded freedom of artistic expression, but the startling impact of his music was a major factor in Stravinsky's subsequent career and his subsequent legacy as one of the most influential modern composers.

Individual items in Stravinsky's repertory are often grouped into so-called 'tone areas' (i.e. collections of related pieces), each based on a new musical idea or ‘tone’ (i.e. new idea). The tone areas reflect Stravinsky's approach to composition. They correspond to the rubrics in the 'System and Source' chapter of the work's Scherzo à la Française (31.7.2.4) and the rubrics 'Ritornello' and 'Partita' in the section of the same work entitled Duo Sonatina (31.5.2.6).

17. All the above works were orchestrated, except The Firebird, which included an orchestra especially commissioned by Diaghilev. This work was premiered in Rome in September 1910, and was originally published as number 136 in the First Supplement to the Musical Times (see Stravinsky, Igor: The Firebird, Dirty Linen Press, 2007, p. 26). The orchestration of the work was not adopted by Stravinsky himself, but by the author of the present score.

The Chamber Symphony was written in 1922 for soloists, an orchestra and piano, and was a classical counterpart to the similarly methodical work of serial composers like Schoenberg. It is the last of six mature compositions for which he wrote for the same instrumentation: this one was originally intended to become a suite which never materialised, and the composer conducted the work as it was written.
