In November 2005, Sega announced Sonic the Hedgehog 2, three years after the original game. It was planned to be a more traditional platform game with some of the underground levels from Sonic the Hedgehog; the game was to be set between the events of Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2, though it would not be parallel to either game.[33]
It is not certain that Sonic Team even considered to develop a game based on the original game's level design in some way. According to Naka, it was decided on early in the development process that the game would be a retelling of the story of the second game from "nostalgia" and "re-imagining" perspectives.[35] The team also developed new boss character Shadow the Hedgehog, based on Sonic'S Jumping abilities and his backstory. He was designed to resemble Sonic the Hedgehog''s design while being with the player in order to appear as an assist. The inclusion of Shadow was determined to be one of the biggest concessions to a mainstream audience.[36]
On December 22, 2005, Sega of America director of marketing and PR David Krall held a press conference about Sonic the Hedgehog; he announced the first footage of the game showed what Sonic the Hedgehog looked like. The footage was shown in HD, and featured the game's Sonic character running on the American console in 3D.[1] On December 21, Sonic Team held a press conference, where several designs for the Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog were shown. "If I had known it was going to be remembered in the same light [as Sonic Adventure], I would have made him a little less heroic" said Yuji Naka. On January 5, during the E3 2006, Sega announced Sonic the Hedgehog, showing several pre-rendered versions of some gameplay from the game. The game was scheduled to be released for the Xbox 360 on November 1, 26 in Europe and Australia, and December 6 in North America.[25] d2c66b5586
