EMORY ENDS SEASON WITH 9-7 LOSS TO SALISBURY(May 18) The ninth-ranked Emory baseball team saw its seasoncome to a close with a 9-7 loss to fifth-ranked Salisbury (Md.) inan elimination game of NCAA Regional play.Emory carried a 7-3 lead into the bottom of the eighth inningwhen Salisbury exploded for six runs to take a 9-7 lead. The SeaGulls would then hold the Eagles scoreless in the ninth for thewin.Emory concludes the season with a record of 31-9 and aUniversity Athletic Association record of 6-0. This season markedthe Eagles seventh UAA Championship and first since 2004. TheEagles have won four conference championships under head coach MikeTwardowski.The Eagles were also ranked No. 1 in the country for the firsttime since the 2001 season and for the second time in programhistory.**Note** Statistics and a complete game review will be madeavailable later this evening.EMORY FALLS TO NORTH CAROLINA WESLEYAN 7-3(May17) In game two of the NCAA Division III Baseball South Regional,fifth-seeded North Carolina Wesleyan (28-16) won its seventhstraight contest and recorded the second upset of the day, downingsecond-seeded Emory (31-8) by a 7-3 score.The Bishops jumped out to an early lead in the top of thesecond. Mark Wooten reached on an error to start the inning,and Kenny Flythe followed with a fielder's choice that saw Wootenslide into second safely. Shortstop Nathan West then ripped atwo-run double to left and promptly scored on a Brad GardnerRBI-double to left-center that gave NC Wesleyan at 3-0 advantage.Emory answered in the bottom half of the frame with two runs onfour singles and an NCWC fielding error. Griffin Baum andFrank Pfister each singled and scored to spark the Eagle rally thatended with the Bishops holding a slim 3-2 lead.NC Wesleyan, however, extended its lead to 5-2 in thefifth. Second baseman Ryan Snyder connected on a two-runsingle to centerfield that plated Chris Pecora and Rob Johnson, whohad each singled to start the inning.The Bishops added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth RBIsby Wooten and Pecora to go up 7-2, and hurler Blake Rice did therest on the mound. The Eagles are theNo. 2 seed in the North Carolina Wesleyan Regional in Rocky Mount,N.C.The seeds for the regional are as follows: No. 1 Salisbury(38-8), No. 2 Emory (31-7), No. 3 Rowan (27-13), No. 4 Bridgewater(31-12-1), No. 5 North Carolina Wesleyan (27-16) and No. 6 VirginiaWesleyan (22-20).The first day of tournament action has Salisbury facing VirginiaWesleyan at 10:00 a.m., Emory versus North Carolina Wesleyan at1:00 p.m. and Rowan versus Bridgewater at 4:00 p.m.This marks Emory's eighth appearance in the post season. Winners of the eight first-roundtournaments will qualify for the double-elimination championship atAppleton, Wisconsin, May 26-30.JUSTIN GORDON AND TRAVIS LANGLEY NAMED COSIDA FIRST TEAMALL-DISTRICT(May 11) Justin Gordon and Travis Langley of the ninth-rankedEmory baseball team were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-DistrictFirst team for the 2005-06 school year.This marks the second time to receive this honor both players.Gordon was a first team honoree last year, while Langley was namedto the first team in 2004. Last season Gordon also received thirdteam Academic All-America honors.Both players are now eligible for Academic All-America honorsfor this year.Serving as a senior co-captain, Gordon has been a solidcontributor for the Emory University baseball team thisseason. The starting second baseman is currently batting .352with 45 hits, 24 runs and 19 RBI. He is also a perfect 12-12in stolen bases, which stands for second-most on the team. He ismajoring in Chemistry and has a GPA of 3.91.This season Langley is batting .265 and scored 12 runs, whilesporting one of the top on-base percentages on the team at .446. Heis majoring in Chemistry and has a GPA of 3.96.To be eligible, a nominee must be at least a sophomore with a3.2 GPA and a starter or key reserve on their team. The Eagles finish the regular seasonwith a No. 9 national ranking and a record of 31-7. They now awaitword on postseason play.EMORY CLAIMS DOUBLE-HEADER SWEEP OVERMETHODIST COLLEGE(April 23) The ninth-ranked Emory baseball team returned to itswinning ways with an important double-header sweep over southregion opponent Methodist College (N.C.) Emory won the games 13-3and 14-11.Emory exploded in the first game to win 13-3. Taking the win forthe Eagles was Jason Glushon, who now stands 9-1 on the year.Justin Gordon finished the game a perfect 4-4, scoring threeruns and adding two RBI. Griffin Baum went 3-4, scoring two runsand adding a game-high four RBI. (25-9) 6-5 in 10 innings.The Eagles, trailing by four funs going into the 7th inning,scored four runs off of four hits to tie the game. JustinGordon, 3-for-5 on the day, and Tim Cournoyer both hit 2-RBIdoubles, knocking in Griffin Baum, David Murchison, David Hisseyand Justin Gordon.Senior Bryan Langboard went 2-for-5 on the day with an RBI inthe third inning. Cournoyer's home run was his third of the season, whileCunningham recorded his first. David Hissey finished the contest4-4 and scored three of the eight Eagle runs.Taking the loss for Emory was Rich Babb, who now stands 2-2 onthe season.The contest was back-and-forth through the first four innings,with Huntingdon holding a 4-3 lead. The Eagles erupted for fourruns in the fifth and one in the sixth to take an 8-4 lead headinginto the bottom of the sixth inning. The Hawks then held Emoryscoreless over the final three innings, while scoring three in thesixth, one in the seventh and two in the ninth for the win.The top-ranked Eagles (29-4) return to action, Friday, April 14when they welcome Millsaps College (Miss.) to Chappell Park for a3:00 p.m. contest.LANGBORD SETS EMORY RECORD INWIN(April 9) Bryan Langbord hit his record-setting 60th careerdouble, helping Emory University, the top-ranked team in thenation, to a 10-0 win over Piedmont College.Langbord entered the game tied with Kyle Foster ('03) and TedKarniewicz ('00) for the school record in career doubles. With a runner on second base and one out in the bottom of theeighth, Langbord came to the plate for his final at-bat of thegame. The senior co-captain doubled to deep left center,driving in a run while setting the new Emory record. Langbordfinished the day one-for-three with two runs scored.Mike Kerfeld and Rich Babb combined for the shutout, the team'ssixth of the season and third in the last six games. Kerfeldallowed five hits in seven and two thirds innings pitched, strikingout two for the win. Kerfeld is now 5-0 this season with a0.99 earned run average, the lowest among all Emory starters thisseason.After winning two out of three this weekend from Piedmont, Emoryimproves to 29-3 for the season. Piedmont won the first contest5-1, while Emory took the second 7-3.The first contest saw Jason Glushon take the loss, dropping hisrecord to 8-1 on the season. In the game, David Hissey led the way,going 2-4, scoring the lone run. Tim Cournoyer recorded the RBIthat scored Hissey.In the second contest, Ian Ganzer improved to 6-1 on the seasonin the 7-3 victory.Justin Gordon was a perfect 3-3, scoring a run and recording twoRBI. The Eagles welcome the Lions to Chappell Park, for a 2:00p.m. contest.EAGLES SHUT OUT OGLETHORPE 3-0(April 5) The top-ranked Emory baseball team defeatedhome-standing Oglethorpe University 3-0 on Wednesday night. TheEagles move to 27-2 on the year and sweep the season series fromthe Stormy Petrels.Picking up the win for the Eagles was Tom Mieczkowski.Mieckowski went eight and two-thirds innings, allowing no runs andsix hits for the game. He now stands 4-0 on the season with an ERAof 1.94.Frank Pfister led the Emory offensive attack, going 3-4 andscoring a run. The Eagles gave up one run on three hits over thelast two innings.In the second game, starter Jason Glushon pitched seven inningsstriking out four and allowing only one run. Glushon improvesto 8-0 on the season and has a 1.25 ERA, third on the team amongpitchers with a win. Glushon is now 15-0 as an Emory Eagle.Third baseman Frank Pfister and second basemen Taylor Gettingerboth went 2-for-4 on the day with a run; Pfister also knocked in anRBI. The Eagles took game one 5-4, before winning 4-0 to closeout the day.During the first game, Emory tied the contest at four on a DavidHissey solo home run. The home run was the first of his Emorycareer. From there Emory took the lead in the seventh to get thewin off Frank Pfister's two-out RBI single up the middle thatscored Griffin Baum.Ryan Lumsden got the win for the Eagles with Rich Babb beingcredited with the save. Lumsden now stands 3-0 on the season, whileBabb earned his third save of the year.The second game was highlighted by the pitching performance ofMike Kerfeld. Jason Glushon was named to thesecond team.Hissey led the conference tournament in batting with apercentage of .619. He finished with 13 hits, while recording sixRBI and scoring three runs. He also had an on-base percentage of.680. Hissey also led the tournament in stolen bases, going 5-6.Ganzer turned in a solid performance from the pitching mound,going 1-0 with an ERA of 1.17. For the tournament he pitched 7.2innings, allowing eight hits and just one run scored. He also had11 strike outs. This marks Ganzer's second consecutive year on thefirst team.Langbord finished the tournament with a batting average of .571,which was good enough for third best in the tournament. Hecollected 12 hits, while scoring seven runs and six RBI. He alsohad a home run. Langbord led the team in total bases with 18, withan on-base percentage of .625.Rounding out the first team members was Pfister. Pfister hit.409 for the tournament, while recording nine hits and six RBI andscoring three runs.On the second team, Glushon finished the tournament with arecord of 1-0 and an ERA of 2.89. He pitched 9.1 innings, allowingfour runs on seven hits, while stiking out 13.This year's championship marked the seventh UAA Championshipsfor the Eagles and first since 2004. The Eagles defeated Depauw University by a score of 8-1.Picking up the win for the Eagles (22-2) was Jason Glushon, whonow stands 6-0 on the season. For the game he struck out sixbatters, and allowing the one run. Glushon's six strike-outs addsto his team-leading total which now stands at 53.Tim Cournoyer led the offensive attack for the Eagles with hissecond home run of the season. Cournoyer went deep in the bottom ofthe fourth to give the Eagles the lead at 1-0. Senior Tom Mieczkowski started the game andpitched six and two-thirds innings striking out three whileallowing only one run.Emory trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the 5th where theyscored two runs. Brandon Custer scored off of a wild pitch,after reaching base on a single. Alex Sotiriou scored on asacrifice fly by Bryan Langboard. Southern Polytechnic tiedthe game up at two in the top of the 8th inning, and Emory finallyscored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th.Custer and Sotiriou both went 2-for-4, including a double byCuster, and scored a run each on the day. The Eagles finished the UAA with a record of 6-0.Saturday saw the team close out with a 4-3 victory of theUniversity of Rochester (N.Y.) to claim the championship.This marks the seventh UAA Championships for the Eagles andfirst since 2004. The Eagles have now won four conferencechampionships under head coach Mike Twardowski.The game against Rochester saw Emory trail 3-0 going into thebottom of the eighth. With two outs Emory got three consecutivedoubles from David Hissey, Joe Roth and Bryan Langbord to tie thegame at three.The bottom of the ninth saw Emory win the game on a squeeze playby Alex Sotiriou that scored Travis Langley.Getting the win for the blue and gold was Tony Vidal. Ian Ganzercame in to pick up the savefor the blue and gold.Highlighting the Emory offense was Tim Cournoyer with a three-runhome run to put thegame away.The Eagles look to capture the UAA Championship Saturday when theyface the University ofRochester (N.Y.) at 10:00 a.m. Emory has already playedRochester, winning 9-1 onWednesday.EAGLES DOMINATE CASE 18-1(March 16) The Emory baseball squad dominated Case WesternReserve Thursday afternoon in an 18-1 victory, raising the recordto 16-1 and 4-0 in the UAA.For the contest Emory had 15 hits, with Joe Roth leading the waywith two home runs. Roth finished the day 3-4, including scoringthree runs and five RBI.David Hissey finished a perfect 3-3 from the plate, whilescoring one run and recording two RBI. Kai Beasley, Bryan Langbord,Frank Pfister and Brandon Custer each recorded two RBI for thegame.Getting the win was Ryan Lumsden who pitched four of the seveninnings. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m.EMORY WIN STREAK AT 15(March 15) The Emory baseball squad continued its hot start tothe season with a 9-1 victory over the University of Rochester(N.Y.) on Wednesday during the second day of play at the UAAChampionships.Emory now stands 15-1 on the season and 3-0 in the UAA.Getting the win for the Eagles was Ian Ganzer. Ganzer worked sixinnings, allowing one run on four hits, while striking out 10. Henow stands 4-1 on the season. Keith Meizler and Julian Smith camein to relieve Ganzer with Meizler striking out four in two inningsand Smith striking out two in the final inning.David Hissey turned in a solid effort to the lead the offensiveattack, going 4-5 with one RBI. Griffin Baum also had a solid daywith a home run and two RBI. Frank Pfister collected three RBI andtwo hits, while Bryan Langbord was 3-5, scoring two runs.Emory used big innings to score its runs. The Eagles scoredthree in the second, four in the fifth and two in the eighth.Rochetser scored its lone run in the third.Up next for the Eagles is a second match-up with Case WesternReserve. The Eagles crushed Case WesternReserve (Ohio) 11-0 before defeating Brandeis University (Mass.)3-1.Emory's opening game against Case saw the Eagles jump out to anearly 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. They added threemore runs in the fourth to up the lead to 6-0. The blue and goldscored another run in the sixth and four more in the seventh beforethe game was called.Leading the way for the Eagles were senior Bryan Langbord andjunior Tim Cournoyer, each going 2-3. Langbord and Cournoyer eachscored two runs as well as two RBI. Senior Taylor Gettinger andjunior Bo Schill also added two RBI each.Getting the win for Emory was Tom Mieczkowski, going six inningsand allowing no runs and just four hits, while striking out six.Emory's final game of the day was against tougher competition inBrandeis, as the Eagles won 3-1.Junior pitcher Jason Glushon turned in a solid outing, goingeight innings and allowing one run on four hits, while striking out10.Langbord continued his stellar play, going 2-4, scoring one runand collecting an RBI. Junior Griffin Baum went 2-3 at the plate,also scoring a run and collecting an RBI. Junior Mike Levin scoredthe other run for the Eagles, while collecting two hits. SophomoreFrank Pfister also had two hits.Emory and Brandeis each scored a run in the first inning and thegame would stay tied through the fourth when the Eagles went up2-1. They gave themselves some breathing room in the seventh withthe third run.Emory, winners of 14 consecutive games, is set to take on theUniversity of Rochester (N.Y.) at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.EMORY TAKES 6-1 VICTORY OVERHEIDELBERG(March 11) Emory University (12-1) extended its winning streakto 12 games with a 6-1 win over Heidelberg College (OH). Mike Kerfeld threw 6.1 innings for Emory to pick up the win,allowing one run on two hits, while striking out six batters. Kerfeld did not allow a hit to Heidelberg until the top of theseventh inning, when Matt Decker singled with one out. Forthe season, the senior is 2-0 with a 0.92 earned run average andhas 28 strikeouts in 19.2 innings.The Eagles struck first in the game, scoring when Joe Rothcrossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Alex Sotiriou in the thirdinning. Emory improved to 10-0 in games where they scorefirst.Justin Gordon went three-for-five at the plate, an RBI single,two stolen bases and a run scored of his own. Sotiriou addedtwo hits and two RBIs.The Eagles will try to keep their winning streak alive when theyhead to Sanford, FL for the University Athletic Associationtournament. Emory plays its first two games of the tournamenton Tuesday, March 14th, against conference rivals Case WesternReserve (OH) and Brandeis University (MA).EMORY-LAGRANGE BASEBALL GAME SUSPENDEDAFTER SEVEN INNINGS(March 9) The Emory-LaGrange baseball game was suspended afterseven innings on Thursday with Emory holding a 6-1 lead. The gamewill be concluded on April 1 when the two squads face for thesecond of three meetings.The game was delayed for close to an hour after a LaGrangeplayer was injured.The Eagles never trailed, scoring a run in the first inning onlyto see LaGrange tie the score in the second. From there the blueand gold scored runs in the fourth and sixth innings to build athree-run cushion. Three more runs were added in the bottom of theseventh where the score stands 6-1.Joe Roth knocked in two RBI, while collecting one hit. The Eaglespitching staff struck out 14 batters while allowing only seven hitsin the game.Ian Ganzer (1.93 ERA) pitched five innings striking out eight,including the first three batters he faced. EAGLES DROP EXTRA INNINGS HEART BREAKERTO MARYVILLE 4-3(Feb. 11) The Emory University baseball team dropped its seasonopener 4-3 in 13 innings to Maryville College (Tenn.) at ChappellPark.The Eagles trailed the Scots 3-2 in the bottom of the sixthinning when Maryville's Colby Jenkins hot David Hissey with a pitchwith the bases loaded. Taylor Gettinger scored to tie thegame. The teams went scoreless until the top of the 13th, when MC's KevinMcKeethan scored off a Ben Peters single.Emory pitching struck out 14 batters over the course of thegame. Starting pitcher Jason Glushon struck out eight battersin seven innings. Keith Meizler and Ian Ganzer had threestrikeouts each in relief over six innings.
