Adding an icon to a resource is not a difficult task. However, you need to be careful when you do so. The XML structure used in EXE files to store icon is a little different than most other resource types. This is because icons are stored as Bitmaps, not as GDI objects. Bitmaps are just a collection of pixels arranged in order. Within the Bitmap, the color data is actually contained in the color table and within the color table is the data for each pixel. This is where the difficulty comes in. If you load a 32-bit bitmap into a 16-bit object, the bitmap can only hold 256 colors, the same as an 8-bit object. This is not a problem per se, but the color table will only contain 256 entries, so the color data will not be saved correctly. You would have to drop a lot of color entries to get the colors from the bitmap to the color table.
Now, all you need to do is load the icon into the resource. To do this, you need to open the file in a text editor. The icons are stored in two sections, the Icon section and the IconList section. To load a single icon, you need to open the Icon section of the file and load the icon into the resource. To load icons into the icon list, you open the IconList section of the file. You can also open both sections in the file at the same time, but you only need to load a single icon. To load icons from the icon list into the resource, you need to use the LoadIconEx() function. It is important to note that, by default, it will only load 8-bit icons into the resource. If you want to load 16-bit or 24-bit images, you will need to overload the function.
It's not entirely clear, but it seems like you need to delete the resource in the exe, but the exe needs to be in a different folder so that it can find that resource. I also tried adding a new icon to the same size and color depth as the existing one but it didn't help.
Some applications, such as Java, require that the application directories and libraries are updated to a newer version before the user can update. However, there are some applications that are not explicitly API-specific, such as the X Window System, the X server source code, are automatically updated as required.
