Danganronpa: The Animation Torrent

I’ll be honest: I started watching UPA ’s anime with the intent of using its influence to try and imagine how I would approach a new computer animation assignment its way. My subsequent discovery that most of the UPA episodes I watched made the list below felt like a call to arms.

Here’s the closest I’ve ever gotten to UPA’s working conditions. Between doe eyes and sharp corners, the animation looks — and feels — like high-quality graphic design. Watch how UPA avoided using any motion blur or frames of black.

The film’s subtext was a call to national pride, as Thomas Nast made clear in 1891. And UPA was one of the first animation studios to capitalise on the power of the graphic arts. It had “an eye for using animation creatively in its promotion of information about the United States in the United States” and got a ton of mileage out of it.

This is a WIP translation of the Dangan Ronpa: The Animation manga by Hector Abravanel and Loushin Teinalami. (I forgot to post them here originally. Their version is a few chapters better since they stop halfway through the core series. I still feel bad about it.) d2c66b5586
