Cort Bass Serial Numbers

When Ibanez added 2 digit serial numbers in the late 1990s, they put them all at the top of the head stock. It makes no sense for a person to "unscrew" the head stock of a guitar in order to count the serial number, so they didn't. They used the heads to determine how many models were produced, but used the serial numbers to differentiate them from each other. So, if a factory encountered a problem, they would just start making new heads for a certain number of models.

Bass series guitars are mostly made at the same time as the Artist series, although some of the bass models are made separately. They did this because the bass models had some unique head stock features, which weren't present in the jazz series guitars.

Bass guitars are a lot more prone to this problem, so it didn't take long for the designers to decide that a new system was needed. In 1991 the Grover Bass was introduced. This newer model had head stock features that were exclusive to the Grover Bass, and all guitars from the Jazz series would come with this feature. In the same year the Takamine Bass was introduced. There were many other 'Grover Bass' models that simply had head stocks which were different from the Jazz series. They either had '20' stamped in' the headstock (like the Jazz 20 series shown below), the '9' for the Grover Bass, or the Takamine Bass "K" stamped in the headstock.

When Ibanez discovered that the Takamine line was a bigger hit than the Grover Bass, they added the '8' to the head stock. Also, if the '9' was on the head stock, they didn't just add '8', they added a large '8' as well. This of course was the '9 Grover Bass', which is why you sometimes see a large number 9 in the head stock (most notable example is the 1984 Takamine Bass pictured in the '900' section above.) d2c66b5586
