Kincaid, Jamaica ( born May 12, 1938 — died September 25, 2008 ) was a Trinidadian American author and poet whose work has a focus on racism in the United States. Her subject is the identity of a black woman in such a place as America.

Her work is often distinguished for its use of black vernacular. She was best known as a poet, but she also wrote fiction, criticism, and nonfiction. She received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1987.

The Kindle edition of A Small Place is one of the only major works written by the author. She gained a lot of popularity due to her first novel The Autobiography of My Mother (1974). The novel reached the number 7 position on the New York Times Best Seller list and was one of the best-selling novels of the year. It was later adapted for television in 1977. The book is set in the Bahamas, and describes the life of a mother (Whitey — the English nanny for the Kincaids) and her sons. The story is centered around the interweaving of the characters through events and circumstances, and is told by the narrator, Whitey.

In 1980, she published a collection of essays called The Farm and a collection of short stories, Another Country, all of which were collected in A Small Place. This work is also part of the “woman-centered series” of works. An autobiography of hers was published in 2002 entitled Mystery. The book took a look at her mother’s life, and explored the relationship between two generations as a result. She was a Guggenheim fellow in 1987.
